I have always been a closet-case geek. I remember the days when DOS games were taking the world by storm, quite vividly. I played Wolf 3D for hours at end! (Not to mention other DOS favourites, like Day of The Tentacle, TMNT, Ducktales, Jones in the fast lane, Commander Keen and of course Duke Nukem to name but a few.) Life was good…
Then High School happened. You know how it is, you constantly worry about what others think of you and let’s face it girls and gaming was a no-no if you wanted to be cool. I got on really well with all the geeks in the school, the jocks too… but I did not like them very much
I often joined the geeks in the LAN to play some Counter Strike (I FED THE ADDICTION AND LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!) The awkward stages passed soon enough and by the end of Grade 10 I did not care about what others thought of me. I was a geek and pretty darn proud of it! (Needless to say, the Counter Strike sessions became a regular thing!)
After meeting my boyfriend (who has been gaming since the ripe age of 4) my love for gaming grew. Not only for the actual gaming part, but for the idea of a group of people playing together as a guild. I started playing UO (bare in mind that it had been ages since the last time I gamed intensely, and MMO’s were very new to me!) I started off with what I now consider the gayest class of all… a RANGER. I was quickly accepted into a guild and pretty soon I was spoiled with rare items, food and loads of arrows (I wonder why ;P).
I remember one day very clearly. I had just started playing UO so I was still a bit noob… OK very noob… OKOK the noobest! (I remember running away from a fellow player because he said “OOoooOOO” to me… how was I supposed to know he was dead?! And he definitely looked like a scary monster to me.) So anyway.. I wondered off into the depths of Delucia in search of something awesome to tame. How was I supposed to know that it is dangerous for an unclassed ranger to explore on her own? Needless to say, I was pwned (pwned is a bit of a euphemism for what REALLY happened) by TWO, yes TWO, dark elf archers. My corpse was yoinked into oblivion. I had to call in the help of my guildies, but for some reason, all the good players were AFK. There were corpses EVERYWHERE but my guild did not give up on me. Eventually we managed to slay the evil beasts. IT WAS AWESOME! So awesome in fact that it should be written in the Guinness book of awesomeness.
As time passed, I finally got the hang of the game and levelled a mage. After the whole Delucia incident, I did not get as many freebies as I used to. I had to fend for myself! They did give me tonnes of arrows, which I do appreciate … but I was a MAGE?!? ;P
UO screenie!
University is quite hectic, so my “gaming” has taken a bit of a backseat. I do still game, but mainly play console games (wii and xbox360.) My boyfriend tries out all the new releases and I enjoy watching him play (I even hog his PC sometimes to try out the games). He often asks me how I can enjoy watching him play while I just sit there, my response:
“It’s like watching a movie! YOU JUST NEVER DIE! If I played I would not even make it to the nearest checkpoint and I would miss out on all the awesome graphics!”
It is quite amazing how much games have evolved since my DOS days. I’m truly happy that I have been part of this evolution.
