Thanks Douches.

I used to think that geeks are the most amazing people in the world, but I’m starting to think that I might be mistaken.  I’m not saying all geeks are douches, but a pretty large group definitely falls under that category.

I’ve always wondered why girls don’t join gaming channels on IRC, but I think I’ve realised why that’s the case.  Before I start raging at the douches who make gaming channels a living hell for females, I have to mention that some of the guys are really awesome.  They don’t make assumptions about you and they don’t treat you differently to any other user in the channel.  Unfortunately though, they are quite hard to find between all the douches.

I used to join a channel called #quake3, not because I actually played the game (although I do love quake, I suck really badly) but because I was invited to chat there by some friends of mine who attended university with me.  I got to know some of the guys, and made some very awesome friends.  But sadly, the hate speech and accusations really got a bit much after a while.

At first I ignored it, because it is IRC after all, and everyone gets insulted at one stage or another, but the insults got really bad and people just assumed that because I am a girl I am an attention seeker who uses my gender to get ops (I don’t even care about ops, it’s not like I ever use them anyway).  I never once asked for special treatment because of my gender, I just wanted to chill and have epic chats with epic people.  I even had this one guy who basically attacked me in private, telling me how I abuse my gender to get guys to do stuff for me, which is not at all the case.  I mean what could I possibly want from a bunch of people on IRC?

He also accused me of flirting with guys in private and leading them on when I have a boyfriend which is cheating.  This really angered me because I feel very strongly about cheating. I would never, ever put someone through such hell.  Also, my boyfriend is awesome, why would I want to cheat anyway!?  So anyway, I decided that it would be best to just part the channel and never return.

So then, a new channel was made called #Starcraft2 and a few of my good friends invited me to join.  During the beta phase of SC2, I joined there every single day and had mad chats with all my friends.  But then, after release, some of the Quake people also joined there and things started to get a bit sour.  I was accused again of being an attention whore for joining a channel made for a game I don’t even play.

I’m sorry, but it’s a little silly to judge me for not playing the game and joining the channel if there are a bunch of other guys who don’t play either.  I am a fan of SC2 and surely that should be enough?  During all the beta tourneys I listened to the casts, I managed to get a beta key which I gave away on Blog Mii, I’ve been reading up on the game itself and I have even managed to get hold of the PR manager of Blizzard who promised to send me a copy of the game to review.  He also gave me a beta key for Cataclysm which I could have sold, but rather gave to a good friend of mine to use on his site for reviewing purposes.  I try my best to be nice to everyone, but then I have to listen to all these insults.  That’s not fair.  So anyway, long story short, I have left the channel as I don’t want to cause vibes and frankly, I’m sick of it.

There is a very big difference between a joke and an insult.  Some guys will say something jokingly while others really try to insult you and be mean.  I don’t understand the logic.  I’m sorry if you had some kind of bad experience with an online girl, but is it really necessary to make assumptions about me based on your own screwed up personal experience?  I join gaming channels because I have good friends there and because I am a fan of the games.  You don’t see me joining Counter Strike or Dota channels, because I hate those games! (no offence guys, but they suck) IRC was made for chatting, what use is it if everyone just idles?

I really wish all these ridiculous assumptions and opinions would just die in a fire along with the people who make chatting a nauseating experience.  Thanks guys.

SO my mom sent me this email today that really made me giggle!  It looked something like this:

This actually happened to me before, I wanted to clean Dug (my laptop) and then I got the vacuum cleaner and when i looked at my keyboard, the vaccuum cleaner sucked up my O key :( I was mad bleak and had to sift through HUGE amounts of dust to find my silly O button!

Okay, so I’m on my dad’s medical aid because I am still a student.  This year, like previous years I sent him a proof of registration to give to his medical aid.  Now all of a sudden, they don’t accept UNISA proof of registration letters as they do not state “FULL TIME STUDIES.”  I don’t have a job because the workload would be way too much to handle, but try explaining that to UNISA.

They refuse to give me a proof of registration stating that I am studying full time.  I have spoken to like 50000 people today and all of them say the same thing “no, that’s not allowed.”  Yesterday, I phoned UNISA and asked them if it can be done and they assured me that it would be no problem.  This morning I go in at like 7am just to be early and they just refuse to help me.

So I am currently without any medical aid because nobody is willing to help me or to put me in contact with the right people.  And as for my PREVIOUS medical aid, they are even more retardo because they refuse to accept a sworn affidavit.  They can even have a look at my financial statements and see that I have no income!  But no, they are dead set on getting a letter from UNISA stating that I’m studying full time.  LETTER OR GTFO.  And in my opinion, a sworn affidavit carries a lot more weight than some stupid UNISA letter.

Lately, it doesn’t even matter where I go I always, ALWAYS get horrible service.  Everything is an endless fight because people are just unwilling to go the extra mile.  What would it take from them to just give me a number of someone who won’t have a problem to help me?

Ok, so I wouldn’t call myself a Grammar Nazi, but I believe that good spelling and grammar is important in a virtual space, such as IRC for example. The reason why I believe it is important is because the text you create is the only thing representing you. If you say stupid things or leave out all the vowels in a sentence, people might have a false impression of what you’re like IRL. Sadly, this is all your fault :P

I think sometimes people might be a bit extreme because they troll every piece of dialogue, waiting for you to make a typo so that they can say “HAH! WHAT A NOOB, you can’t even spell!” I think there is a difference between people who type like idiots and people who make occasional typos. Usually (especially on IRC) people get involved in heated debates and you find yourself typing faster and faster to make sure you win the debate. Obviously typing faster and faster might cause you to make typos. It is important to know the difference between a mistake and ignorance. I think I will use an example to illustrate what I mean.

Have a look at the following sentence:

Josh took me to the movies tonight, he’s just awesome.

Now, if you are a complete idiot, your sentence would look something like this:

J 2k me 2 da mvs 2nite hs jst awsm

You think your eyes are bleeding after reading that? My eyes and fingers are bleeding after WRITING that. It just doesn’t read easily, you know? You can’t express yourself thoroughly when you write like this it just puts people off reading what you’re saying. Vowels should be appreciated more. Seriously.

If you are just having a casual conversation your sentence would look something like this:

Josh took me to the movies tonight, hes just aewsome

There are two errors in this sentence. The first is the error is the left out apostrophe in “hes”. The sentence still makes perfect sense despite the lack of an apostrophe. The second error is the misspelling of the word “awesome”. If you chat a lot you would know that sometimes your fingers type too fast and you make small mistakes. All of you can agree that sentence #2 doesn’t make you look like an idiot. Any literate person can see that you’ve made a typo and leave it because it is insignificant. I really think people fret too much about small things. You have to read things in context! If a person makes occasional typos chances are they are by accident.

If a person is not a native speaker of the language you are communicating in, they might use commas and apostrophes in the wrong places. Don’t be a douche and point out their mistakes by laughing at them, I’m pretty darn sure as soon as they press enter they see the mistakes themselves anyway. Point it out politely if you feel it is okay to do so. If people continue to use bad spelling and grammar though and they keep saying idiotic things, then it is okay to say something about it :P
